Mali : On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Biogaran participated in free screening sessions

Posted on

In collaboration with the Malian Association for the Fight Against Diabetes, Biogaran signs a new strong act in favor of access to healthcare for all.

On Saturday November 20th, on the occasion of the commemoration of World Diabetes Day, Biogaran participated in free diabetes screening sessions in Bamako in collaboration with the Malian Association for the Fight Against Diabetes.

Diabetes, a real public health issue in Mali

In Mali, a country of more than 20 million inhabitants [1], the prevalence of diabetes was estimated at 0.95% in 1985 [2] and is now estimated at about 2.4% of the population [3]. According to the Malian Ministry of Health, this figure is largely underestimated since, as early as 1996, diabetes accounted for 40% of internal medicine consultations at the Gabriel Touré Hospital. [3]

Also, the lack of information on diabetes, the insufficient training of the staff or the cost of medication lead to a delay in diagnosis and rapid treatment [2]. As a result, most patients are unaware of their disease and are only detected at very advanced stages, often when the first complications have already appeared.

Promoting access to diagnosis and care for all

It is in this context that Biogaran wanted to join forces with the Malian Association for the Fight Against Diabetes to participate in a free diabetes screening day on November 20. On this occasion,  more than 300 people were screened.

After the session, Biogaran provided patients with therapeutic education booklets on diabetes to help them understand and manage their condition.

The initiative led by the Malian Association for the Fight Against Diabetes, in which Biogaran participated, was welcomed by the Malian health authorities, who have expressed the wish to make this action permanent.
